A Message from Chief Instructor, Brandon Dolan

I have always been fascinated with Martial Arts.

As a kid I desperately wanted to be a Ninja Turtle. However, as I got older I thought it would be embarrassing to say I was training in Martial Arts as an adult. I was too self conscious to pursue Martial Arts training on my own, but I jumped at the opportunity to take Martial Arts with my nephew when he turned six. I was immediately hooked. I found myself training 5 to 6 times a week.

The more I trained the more confident I became. I wasn't worried what people thought and I was proud to say that I was a Martial Artist. Even as an adult, I saw the benefits of Increased confidence, more focus, and setting intentional goals for my Martial Arts training as well as for my life. I also loved the positive atmosphere of being surrounded by respectful and encouraging instructors and fellow students and friends.

I have been training for about 5 years now. I am a First Degree Black Belt in American Freestyle Karate and I am actively training towards my Second Degree Black Belt in December of 2015. I completed my instructor’s certification courses while training for my Black belt, and was awarded both my First Degree Black Belt, and my Instructor’s Certification the same day.

Just as I fell in love with Martial Arts, I also fell in love with giving families the same Confidence, Respect, Focus, Self Discipline, and Family Bonding Experience I gained from Martial Arts.

I have been Instructing for almost 3 years now and love every second. With hard work, determination, and the support of my Instructors, I have risen through the ranks and I am now the Chief Instructor and owner of Focus Family Martial Arts Academy in Fairfax, VA.

I look forward to making a difference in peoples lives every day. What I have gained from Martial Arts has made me a better Instructor, husband, and father. And I am so happy to be able to share this with my new community of Fairfax.

A Message from Program Director, Rachel Dolan

“Karate must be in my blood.”

Nearly every guy in my family either has a black belt, is an instructor, or has at least taken karate at some point in their lives. I was first coerced into a karate class when I was 14 years old. I took a class along with my dad and my brother. I remember enjoying class, and looking back, it did improve my confidence. Fast forward a few years, and I was coerced again - this time by my son! - into taking Martial Arts Classes with him.

I had a wonderful experience learning and growing with my son, and I found that not only was I bonding with my son, but having the ability to kick something in karate class at the end of a stressful day was incredibly therapeutic.

Most importantly, I found a true passion in my life, to help other families gain the same confidence, focus, and strength that my son and I gained through our Martial Arts experience. Fast forward a few more years...

I am currently a second degree black belt in American Freestyle Karate.

I am the program director and co-owner of a Focus Family Martial Arts in Fairfax Virginia. I am a staff trainer, a consultant for other martial art schools, and I am an enthusiastic advocate for life skill education and personal growth. Martial Arts is an ideal tool for educating students of all ages in these important subjects.

Martial Arts and all it has taught me has truly changed my life. And it has changed my son’s life. I have seen firsthand what a powerful tool Martial Arts can be.
